Photos of KANHAM 2017

KANHAM - Kansai Ham Festival - , second largest ham festival, has been held on July 15-16th in Osaka, Japan. Visitors can touch working samples of ICOM IC-7610 and so on. Here are some pictures taken in KANHAM 2017.

Now the remarkable ICOM IC-7610. Some appearances seems to be modified from last year.

The IC-7610 is expected to be released at the end of this summer.


Alinco's new mobile 5Watt Digital Convenience Radio (D-CR) DR-DPM60, about $460 excluding tax.


Yaesu FT-70D Japan version. This HT is currently available.


A dual band HT FT-65, not 65R, from Yaesu will be released but not announced in detail yet.

A staff said "The FT-65 is successor of the FT-60. The release was suddenly brought to me this Friday and no further information."
The body is completely same as FT-65R already released in the US this year. Only the firmware and built-in FM receiver are temporarily fit for Japan.


A Motorola D-CR GDR4200, which has up to 2.5W output with 3.7V Lithium-ion battery.

CL08, a 20+27ch 10mW Low power License-Free radio, pronounced "create" is released a few years ago. It uses 1AA alkaline battery. There are three colors.


FDM-DUO, an ELAD SDR, is also displayed. The camo version is so cool!


Although it was 93.2F with high humidity today, I talked to some exhibitors with same hobby and enjoyed.

Alinco releases DMR Radios DJ-AXD1 and DJ-AXD4

Alinco has released new single band handheld two-way radios.

DJ-AXD1


The DJ-AXD1 is a Digital/Analog radio that operates on VHF single band. Size of the radio is 2.52”W X 4.72”H X 1.5”D. The weight is approximately 11.29lbs with a 2000mAh Li-ion battery pack EBP-100. The Digital mode is DMR TierI and TierII.

Appearance of the DJ-AXD1 is;
- Full Dot-matrix and full keyboard with white backlit
- RF power output : 5/1W selectable
- Text messages
- DTMF
- Scan functions
- IP67
etc.

No 0.2Watt, 2.5Watt power output select, no 64ch/zone on DMR operation, no Digital Recorder etc. The function of the DJ-MD40, a UHF DMR/Analog radio is better than that of the DJ-AXD1.

Top of the DJ-AXD1 has antenna connector, red emergency call button, dial, volume and TX/RX LED indicator. The AF output is up to 1W of maximum. Optional battery pack is not same as that for DJ-MD40.

Available date of these radio DJ-AXD1 and DJ-AXD4 will be by the end of this year (2017) as DJ-MD40 released end of the last year. The price is about $200 MSRP. We will get more information in Xenia Hamvention 2017.

Alinco releases full-TRIPLEX transceiver DJ-P300

A low-power two way radio with triplex/duplex communication features is released by Alinco.

DJ-P300 is successor of the DJ-P25 full-duplex low-power radio.

The DJ-P300, which is only for Japan market, is first full-triplex transceiver without external repeater/controller/mixer and so on. It has IP67 and works only 2AA batteries or optional EBP-60 Lithium Ion battery pack. There are some communication mode such as full-triplex with three radios, full-duplex with two radios, simplex, full-duplex self-repeaters (the one of two), simplex with time-out penalty reduction mode, full-duplex with time-out penalty reduction mode and free channel full-duplex mode. There is no semi-duplex mode and semi-duplex self-repeater mode. With 1mW (ultra low power) mode, continuous full-triplex talk is available. Variable voice scrambler is also equipped with the DJ-P300.

Procedure of use of the full-triplex mode is as follows;
1) first person calls other transceiver(s). Transceiver that the first person has  is worked as a repeater / a mixer and a controller
2) second person press PTT (full-duplex mode)
3) last person press PTT (full-triplex mode)

I don't know how it works at the end of first person's talk. It might be cut talking between the second and the third when the radio that the first person has shuts down.

Other features is same as DJ-R200D excluding semi-duplex mode and semi-duplex self-repeater mode. The appearance is same as DJ-R200D too.



Price is about $441 without tax. The DJ-P300 is available soon within this week (by February 24th) in Japan. If you want to experience the FULL-TRIPLEX mode without any external repeaters, you have to get three DJ-P300s that cost over $1300 of total.

Review : Alinco DJ-R200D

Alinco DJ-R200D is a Low Power License-Free two way radio. The DJ-R200D is built in many many features such as self semi-duplex repeater, full-duplex mode, full duplex repeater (two DJ-R200D and an optional cable needed), incoming vibrator etc..

Recently the DJ-R200D has been started selling in Japan then I have got one and checked some features.



Overview


The DJ-R200D is successor of DJ-R100D. The DJ-R200D has long antenna model (DJ-R200DL) and short antenna (DJ-R200DS). These antennas cannot be detachable because of convenience for a law.

The DJ-R200D has additional features unlike the DJ-R100D as follows;

Appearance & Feeling

Although shape of the DJ-R100D feels like Korean TTi radios, the DJ-R200D looks sharper. Turning operation of channel/volume knob feels even harder. This will reduce unintended operations and will be easy to operate when wearing gloves.

Length of the antenna is bit a little shorter than DJ-R100D's. The DJ-R200DL's holds 6.417" (163mm, actual), DJ-P222L, slim 1 x AA model without self-repeater functions, has 6.477" (164.5mm) and the DJ-R100D is 6.477"(164.5mm) too. LCD backlit of the DJ-R200D is brighter than DJ-R100D. The DJ-R200D is added to internal indicators to three function buttons.

Construction of the battery cover is also updated. The battery cover of the DJ-R200D includes fixed part with a spring in the cover for locking role of the battery compartment. The DJ-R100D is apart the part from the cover.

I think the DJ-R100D's feels easier to replace batteries.





Power source & earphone/microphone jack


The DJ-R200D works 2 x AA alkaline batteries, EBP-60 (optional Li-ion battery pack) or 5-6VDC power supply. Ni-MH rechargeable AA batteries which it used to load to the DJ-R100D cannot be available officially but worked when I checked.

The DJ-R200D has one earphone / microphone jack for 3.5mm 4-poles single type with screw like YAESU. This will be tough against water and dust.

Covers for the earphone jack and the external DC jack are completely apart from DJ-R200D. We need consideration not to lose them. These covers will cost you about five dollars per one part if you lose.

Work & Function


The DJ-R200D has various kinds of communication modes not only simplex but semi-duplex, full-duplex, semi-duplex self repeater only one DJ-R200D. When you have two DJ-R200D and optional cable ADUA-97, you can obtain better functions such as a simplex repeater and a full-duplex repeater.

As special commands exists in the DJ-R200D, I have checked them. Not all of them revealed but rest are done. The special settings as below (click to enlarge);

The special settings not released yet officially by Alinco at present. This is a result of my test. A special command needed if you change these preferences.

The special command is : Press Group button five times within 10 seconds after "Loc" turned on


- Tail noise canceller

Tail noise canceller is a function which cancels EOT(end of talking) noise without group code. It is compatible with most Chinese analog two way radios. You also can turn off the function.


- Voice guidance

Once you press buttons excluding PTT or Hook, the DJ-R200D speaks itself. When the power button pressed, the DJ-R200D speaks current condition such as channel and number.of a group. This is good for me but the timing is slow after buttons pressed.
When entering setting mode, the guidance speaks only "number of order" of the setting, not "name". That is almost useless.

- Shock & temperature sensor

Shock sensor and temperature sensor are built in the DJ-R200D. When these shock/temperature output exceed the threshold, the DJ-R200D transmits alarm sound on the wave.


- Receiving voice recorder/playback up to 30 seconds


If you assign "rEC" to the hook button on the extended menu, you can record only one receiving voice until end of the talk within 30 seconds. Press hook button for two seconds to start recording while receiving.

The playback function is enabled only to press the hook button once after recording. Recorded voice data is stored into non volatile memory in the DJ-R200D. The playback sound is varied with noise.

An audio spectrum analyzer says the alias noise from 3-10kHz increased at playback as above. The recorder does not stand by while closing the squelch. If you want to record whole talk, Uniden BCD436HP, BCD536HP or ICOM ID-51 would be nice.



- Time-out penalty mode


Due to Japanese law, continuous talk period of 10mW license free radios limits up to 3 minutes. The time-out penalty mode efficiently reduces talk limit using Alinco's exclusive frequency hopping technology.

Actually this mode uses two preset frequency. There are eight settings from A to H. When mode A set, each of channel b12 and b21 is transmitted every three minutes alternately as follows;

The DJ-R200D seems not to use controller channels that are assigned officially yet.


Transmitter & Receiver


I have tested the TX distance with my YAESU VX-8D. It is convenient of me to compare with two radio waves because the VX-8D has double receivers and can output their voice left and right independently. Each radio (DJ-R100D and DJ-R200D) has Li-ion battery EBP-60 fully charged.

At 10mW output, transmission distance of the DJ-R100D is slight further than DJ-R200D. White noise of TX sound of the DJ-R200D is less than that of DJ-R100D. Normal TX sound quality is almost same too. When the strong audio captured into the mic, the aliased sound can be heard.

The receiver is habitable. Sensitivity is sharp. In short, it is easy to distinguish strong and weak signals. Receiver sticks to the weakness of a bitter signal and then fills with noise as the signal gets weak.

When very weak signal receiving at monitor mode and as the signal strength becomes strong, receiving sound suddenly becomes smaller temporally. This timing seems squelch threshold level. I did not find same situation on the DJ-R100D. Moreover, when squelch is off (monitor mode), the receiver noise emphasizes high tone.

Especially 4-5kHz is emphasized at no signal as above. Those are strange.


Volume of the receiver is louder than that of DJ-R100D. When the volume is set to minimum, the sound is loud like many Chinese radios. In other words 400mW speaker output is real. And when using earphone microphone and the voice guidance is turned on, the guidance is very loud even if the volume is minimum.

It also has scan. The scanning speed is 15ch/sec, that is much faster than DJ-R100D.

Conclusion

The Alinco DJ-R200D has much more features than expected. It is easy for the receiver to get peak of the weak wave. I think the DJ-R100D fits for my long use however, faster scanning speed, compander, tail noise canceller, louder sound etc. attract me though some minor bugs are found. Thus, I am to own both radios after all.....

Alinco announces DJ-MD40 DMR transceiver

As opened at Dayton Hamvention 2016, new DMR Radio DJ-MD40 officially released from Alinco.



The DJ-MD40 is a DMR transceiver that is 10.75oz(305g) with EBP-96 Li-ion battery pack, 2.44"W x 4.41"H x 1.81"D (6.2W x 11.2H x 4.6D cm). The DJ-MD40 supports as the following functions;

  • 400-480MHz operation
  • DMR Tier I/II
  • Analog 12.5/20/25kHz TRX
  • DMR and Analog Mixed Mode
  • 5/2.5/1/0.2W selectable RF output
  • Programmable upto 1000ch in 64ch/zone(MAX)
  • Full dot-matrix with color-selectable backlit LED
  • Built in digital recorder
  • Quick contract accesses
  • Various security passwords and alert tone features
  • Text Messages
  • IP54
  • 1000mW Audio Output
  • Other features all included at NO extra costs

The standard accessories are EA-212 whip antenna, EBP-96(7.4V 2600mAh) Li-ion battery pack, EDC-211 battery charger, EDC-212/213 AC adapter, EBC-45 belt clip and a wrist strap. The PC interface cable (optional) for DJ-MD40 seems not a serial cable, a USB cable.


Oh, now I just found a fact. Look the EA-212 antenna of DJ-MD40 from the brochure.

These antennas look almost same. As someone commented before, DJ-MD40 might also be developed by Anytone.



By the way, why does Alinco choose DMR? I assume DMR is a most widely used digital format in the world. On the website of Universal Radio, regular price of the DJ-MD40 is $249.95 MSRP and the sale price is about $220.

As you know, for TYT MD-390 VHF DMR two way radio is about $160 on 409shop, price of the DJ-MD40 would not be competitive. Plus MD-390 has color LCD, IP67, Voice Prompt and Encryption.TYT MD-390 seems smarter and cooler than DJ-MD40.

 I doubt that DJ-MD40 would succeed because Alinco used to fail a Japanese digital D-CR HT DJ-DPS50. The malfunctions were "voice not received at all after a long time stand-by with Battery Save Mode" and "bad reception sound quality problem". It is needless to say those problems have been fixed or improved by Alinco of course.

I do not know whether Alinco would become a competitor even if DJ-MD40 equips with 250 zones with 64 channels per zone at DMR mode.

DJ-FX45/FX446 and NX-20X/20R

Just found DJ-FX45 and DJ-FX446 released by Alinco USA last year(2015) and have a question.

 F.R.C. Japan has released NX-20X in 2014 and NX-20R in 2016(maybe). It is natural I wonder what the difference between Alinco's and the other's is.

NX-20X is the product name. It comes with a pair of transceivers and the accessories. Both black and red are available.

NX-20R adds NX-20X and Repeater channel access function, not a pair, only 1set. The color is only black.

These 2models are customized for Japan, not suitable for FRS or PMR.

Let's check details of DJ-FX45, DJ-FX446, NX-20X and NX-20R;


NX-20 series have 76-90MHz FM radio receiver and Stop Watch function. Alinco HTs has ..... we may use the Stop Watch if we press M key 10times. And we may receive FM radio as NX-20X's instruction says if we press M key 11times. That's fantastic if they are activating!

DJ-FX45 and DJ-FX446 has a mini-USB port of each. NX-20X and NX-20R has a micro-USB port. That means these Alinco HTs are compatible with ERW-8 programming cable. On the other hand F.R.C. products may be compatible with most of all smartphone chargers, not fit Alinco ERW-8.

Except channel and RF power settings, each specification is almost same. We can get to know these radios must be produced in the same factory or by the same manufacturer.

Waterproof? No. Shockproof? No. If we get more tough and more strong, we select more expensive HTs. The attractiveness of DJ-FX45, DJ-FX446, NX-20X and NX-20R is slim, lightweight and cheap. That's it!
